On Saturday March 25th volunteers under the direction of Paul Murphy of the Butts Hill Fort Restoration Committee of the Battle of RI Association worked on clearing the South side of the Fort outside the earthworks. Clearing involved removal of accumulated trash as well as invasive species and the removal of deadfall limbs, no trees were cut per approval of the Portsmouth Tree Commission and Town Council. Two 30-cubic yard dumpsters were filled, and half of the stone wall is now visible.
Volunteers included RI State Senator Linda Ujifusa, Portsmouth Town Council member J. Mark Ryan, and RI Representative Terri Cortvriend. Several members of the Bristol Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution were involved again in the cleanup. Much of the prep work was done gratis by Eric Whipple, a certified arborist from whippletreeexperts.com. Mr. Whipple lives near the fort and when he found out about our endeavors, he immediately donated his time and equipment. More cleanups will take place in the future.
