The Trial of Fortune Stoddard: Race, Patriotism, and Solidarity in Revolutionary Rhode Island

Michael J. Simpson, a professor of history at Johnson & Wales University, a public historian, and trustee of the Cocumscussoc Association will present a lecture on a soldier in the First Rhode Island Regiment named Fortune Stoddard. Born enslaved in Middletown, he was tried in Maryland during the American Revolution.
