38th Annual Torch Run

January 16 @ 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

The Newport County Branch – NAACP, with community partners, will be hosting the 38th Annual Torch Run on Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Holiday – January 16, 2023. Starts at 9:00am.

The torch is symbolic of basic freedoms that should be available to everyone, and the run represents the effort that it takes to maintain these freedoms.

The run is part of a day-long celebration of Dr. King’s birthday – the most extensive commemoration of the civil rights leader in Rhode Island. The run starts in Portsmouth at the Black Regiment Monument, the site of the famous Battle of Rhode Island in the American Revolutionary War. The run ends at the Community Baptist Church Annex in Newport. Refreshments will be offered to participants and spectators.
Any person who is interested in participating in the run is welcomed to join. This is an exciting way to display support of civil and human rights, so please come forward.

Area police departments assist in assuring traffic safety, but runners are responsible for their personal safety.
