Smith’s Castle Opening Day

May 4 @ 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM

This season’s Smith’s Castle Opening Day kicks off with an 11am parade down Richard Smith Drive with re-enactors, docents, and the Wickford Rangers marching to the lawn of the Castle and a musket salute. As this year also marks the 350th anniversary for the Town of North Kingstown, Historian Tim Cranston and Town Councilor Matt McCoy will both speak about this important occasion.

Re-enactors include: The Kingston Reds, a Lebanon, Connecticut Militia; the 1st and 2nd Rhode Island Regiments; community living history interpreters; and the Wickford Rangers—a junior militia unit that the Castle will organize (see recruitment info above) this spring. The group, composed of boys and girls, will perform drills at future events and march with others in the 350th Anniversary parade in October. As always visitors can tour Smith’s Castle historic house museum and have their questions answered by and learn historical facts from docents available in many of the rooms. Visitors will enjoy games for children and demonstrations of colonial crafts. Available for purchase during the day will be homemade bake goods and yard sales items.

Admission is by donation for this event.
