Newport’s British Occupation Walking Tour

Newport Historical Society Collections, object #MS.1995.30.1.3. April 1776. Map of Newport Harbor, April 1776. The map shows the position of British ships that came under cannon fire near Fort Dumpling, Brenton Point, Rose Island and Goat Island, Coddington Cove and Coaster’s Harbor Island. Text on the verso reads “…An account or representation of four successful cannonadings of the King’s Ships at Newport Rhode Island on the 6th, 7th, 11th and 14th of April, 1776…”.

In 1777 as the Revolutionary War officially began, 7,000 British and Hessian soldiers invaded Newport creating an occupation that lasted for nearly 3 years. Explore the sites and stories of the soldiers and citizens affected during this time.
