“History in the Family”
Middletown Historical Society’s
2024 Winter Lecture Series

Sunday, January 28th 2:00-4:00 PM Middletown Public Library

History is not just made by the rich and famous; it can be found right in your own family tree. The 2024
Winter Lecture Series, “History in the Family,” sponsored by the Middletown Historical Society in
partnership with the Middletown Public Library, will explore the lives of some local ancestors who
helped shape the community we share today. Featured speakers will reveal fascinating insights
unearthed while researching their own family histories, and a local historian will explore the “hidden
histories” of those whose stories have often been overlooked in traditional historical records. The
monthly lectures will be held on Sundays, 2-4pm, on January 28, February 25, and March 24 at the
Middletown Public Library.* All lectures are free and open to the public and will include time for
questions and answers. No registration is required, but seating is limited.

The first lecture, on Sunday, January 28, will feature two of Middletown’s founding families, the
Barkers and Peckhams, including Revolutionary War patriot Isaac Barker, as told by his direct
descendant Christopher Barker. What began as a chance encounter in a local bookstore spurred Barker
to uncover a 400-year tale of unbroken connection to Aquidneck Island. As a result, Barker relates that
“wherever I roam on this small island, I have a brand-new relationship with my home, filled with awe,
wonder, and fascination around every corner.” Even the bookstore where his adventure began turned
out to be on the site of a former family homestead. Barker will share some of the more remarkable
stories to emerge from his research so far, while orienting story settings to their present-day locations
and recent history. For those interested in learning more about Barker’s research techniques, a sign-up
sheet will be available for a future workshop on exploring local family histories.
