Butts Hill Map 66

The numbering of this map corresponds to the text of the Mémoire Sur la ville de Newport en Rhode-Island (Call No. GR 1 VM 209 in Vincennes) and in GR 1 VN 7, identified as Archives du Génie 15 in Howard C. Rice Jr. and Anne S. K. Brown, The American Campaigns of Rochambeau’s Army 1780, 1781, 1782, 1782.  2 vols. (Princeton and Providence, 1972), vol. 2, p. 299. I transcribed and translated that Mémoire in file the Ms-Word file “05-SHD-GR 1 VM 209 – Desandrouins 1780 Newport defenses”. This map helps date the Mémoire.

       Tommhill, a fort very advantageously situated
        very high and surrounded by rocks. What is missing
        is that it should be closer to the sea.
