This print captures when the the Rhode Island First Regiment, also known as the Black Regiment, repelled the third and final assault of German auxiliaries who were trying to outflank the American line on their right side. The painting includes Butts Hill Fort and Narragansett Bay with three British warships who are bombarding the battlefield. Mount Hope can be seen in the distance. In the foreground, the battle colors of the German auxiliaries that have fallen into the Bloody Brook so named for the blood-colored brook in the battlefield. American soldier messengers are seen riding up to General Sullivan’s Headquarters at Butts Hill Fort.
